The use of water for energy is not new and river weirs were constructed by their thousands to generate mechanical power for the industrial revolution. However technology has advanced and there is now opportunity to use this existing infrastructure and our natural resources to generate green electricity and to help Wales become a leader for low carbon energy.
The Welsh Assembly Government has set ambitious targets that we need to generate renewably up to twice as much electricity annually by 2025 as we generate today and by 2050 at the latest, be in a position where almost all of our energy needs can be met by low carbon electricity production. Small hydro projects can contribute significantly to these aims and in the right location hydro-electric generation is far more cost effective than PV solar cells or wind turbines in terms of Watts generated per £ spent and have a much lesser visual impact than wind turbines.
We offer a range of services to develop hydropower projects and will work with you and partners to develop a number of alternative options and work through the various technical and financial issues in order to develop the best solutions for your circumstances.
We are currently working with a number of community groups and local authorities to develop projects and are working with institutional investors to establish a Welsh hydropower fund for community based projects.
